Many years ago, the only means for social interaction was for one to be physically present in a social gathering or function. Today people from different parts of the world communicate, collaborate or even share contents through SOCIAL MEDIA,an internet base technology or application which provides the platform for social interaction. There are various forms of social media depending on what purpose it serves. According to Kaplan and Haenlein there are six different types of social media: collaborative projects (e.g. Wikipedia), blogs and microblogs (e.g. Twitter), content communities (e.g. Youtube), social networking sites (e.g. Facebook), virtual game worlds (e.g. World of Warcraft), and virtual social worlds (e.g. Second Life).

Automation engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the use of methods for controlling industrial and domestic equipment and processes automatically especially by electronically controlled systems, often reducing manpower.
Social media have been very useful in the propagation of automation engineering product and services as it bridges the communication gap between the automation industry and its customers.
Sales of automation product have drastically increased in recent years owing to the increase in use of social media as a platform for marketing advertisement.
Customer services have been more effective with the use of various social media as it provide a friendly avenue for customers to make complaint about the products and services and get help from technical expert.
Today, most automation vendors have recognized the power of social media relating to the spread of automation knowledge of their own products, and they operate their own blogs and communications channels. Many end-user companies too are developing private versions of Facebook to help their employees, customers and suppliers in all worldwide locations to communicate and exchange ideas.
Automation professional can also use social media such as linkedIn to create and share their portfolios on the internet for consultations or job applications.

Web-based social networking spaces offer a way for individuals or groups to create a profile of themselves, then share that profile with other members of the social networking space. The specific site will provide a variety of ways for users to communicate with others in the space, including instant messaging, chat rooms, e-mail or site mail, blogs, file sharing, videos, discussion groups, and so on.
Two popular social networking sites are LinkedIn and Facebook. While both are designed to connect people online, the two sites represent different types of connections.
LinkedIn is designed more for business and professional networking and offers a profile and options to network in a business sense. Facebook, on the other hand is designed more to connect family and friends. For example When I want to know where an old colleague is working now, I use LinkedIn but I want to find out if that same colleague is married and if they have kids, I use Facebook.
In terms of privacy protection and security,LinkedIn is perceived to be safer as most profiles in it are typically professional.Although facebook is allows for public access to personal profile most users prefer not to reveal their profile except to close friends or relatives.
While most businesses prefer LinkedIn for their B2B(Business to Business)marketing, facebook is seen as a suitable tool for B2C(Business to Customer)marketing where companies deal directly with the public consumers.Unlike facebook LinkedIn is also good channel for recruitment as a result of its large accessible professional profile database.
