Visiting Tanzania after 10 years

I have been working in Tampere-Mwanza project in 2008 and 2009. Those six months spent in Mwanza made me notice some little things which could be done differently. This article reflects my observations and how I wish things develop within the next 10 years.

I have been working in Tampere-Mwanza project in 2008 and 2009. Those six months spent in Mwanza made me notice some things which could be done differently. This article reflects my observations and how I wish things develop within next 10 years.

For background information, Mwanza is a port city on the southern shore of Lake Victoria in northwestern Tanzania. It is ranked as Tanzania’s second largest city with approximately 700 000 inhabitants. TAMK trainees’ main tasks were civil education on separation of waste and composting as well as on importance of keeping the near-by environment clean. Most of the waste produced in Mwanza is biodegradable waste. Grocery shops accepted soda bottles made of glass but plastic water bottles ended up to waste piles among the streets.

I hope that when I visit Tanzania after 10 years, there has been happened some little chances. Especially the waste management has been improved and every school has their environmental groups like in the project schools 10 years before (in 2009). Also environmental issues are discussed in schools and compulsory “Health and environment” –courses have been added on the study programs. When it comes to other kind of waste, such as plastic water bottles, there should be collection points for those also. Coca-cola Company and other breweries accept also plastic bottles and they are recycling or reusing plastic from old packaging in 2019.

This way people get new employment opportunities (collection points for plastic bottles) and environmental management will be improved when citizens realize why biowaste should be separated from other waste. It would also improve the gardening and cultivation as composted biowaste improves the rocky soil quality.

Opportunity: People get new employment opportunities and environmental management will be improved.

Threat: People are not willing to change their way of living. They do not see how they would get benefit of the changes..
